The Media has been one of the chief problems in creating our short attention spans--such conditioning is dangerous for achievement. One cannot create without a loss of time itself. To create, time must stop. Can you imagine Bach watching a TV commercial? 20 Years ago edits in commercials were by the half second--today the hundreds of edits within a commercial are often less than a tenth of a second--and remember ---within every commercial are lies . So on this Thanksgiving day David Dubal asks you to never watch or listen to a commercial again. You will feel lighter and you will buy less junk.
Recently while in China at the airport on my way to Wuhan to give a lecture recital, the security officer looked at my passport , looked up at me, and said "take your sunglasses off." I took my sunglasses off, looked at him and in a rather loud voice said slowly : " Now Do You Recognize Me? "
Mussorgsky wrote " I regard the people as one great being, inspired by one idea. This is my problem. I strove to solve it in my opera Boris Godunov." Dubal replies when you regard a people as one great creature inspired by one idea, that country will be in great trouble. Whenever an artist attempts in opera to solve this problem, he will almost certainly fail. Yet Boris Godunov is a masterpiece only because he was an individual of genius trying to survive within the mass, such a country is almost impossible for an artist to survive in. Of course Mussorgsky died at 41 of alcoholism. Like Tolstoy, he was wracked by the violence and heart breaking injustice inflicted on millions of Russian serfs. No one ever loved Russia as much as Mussorgsky.
Schnabel was the greatest sonata performer of all time. Listen to my program on WQXR 105.9 on Thursday December 5th where you will hear the most delightful Rage over a lost Penny---Rondo. You tell me if Schnabel had finger technique? Nobody plays this piece like him . This is my blog today. Listen and be happy.
Liberty by David Dubal ( line drawing )
Few people know that the great opera composer Charles Gounod was a fine thinker. Here is his thought on Liberty. " Liberty is as real as heaven. It is a heave on earth--the country of the elect; but it must be earned, and conquered, not by oppression, but by self devotion; not by pillage, but by generosity; not by taking life, but by bestowing it, in the moral as well as material sense".
Note: In the near future a book of David Dubal's line drawings will be published and for sale.
This is David Dubal. I am introducing the first entry in my new blog which I will be frequently updating either with my own original thinking or with quotes from others. All feedback is welcome and I hope that 1 billion people follow my thinking.
